TONY ESPINO DRIVE-IN V1.1 ORIGINAL DRAFT 6/10/15

INT. CAR – NIGHT

ELROY and BETSY sit in the car watching a movie at the drive
in.

BETSY
Thanks for bringing me to the drive
in. But this movie is so scary,
Elroy.

ELROY
I love it when you’re scared, baby.

BETSY
It’s Betsy. And I don’t understand
why you like it when I’m scared.

ELROY
It turns me on, baby. Your fear
smells so good.

BETSY
It’s not polite to go around
sniffing people’s fear, Elroy.

ELROY
Can’t help it. Smells so good.

He gets close to her and begins smelling her.

BETSY
Not so close now, Elroy. You’re
making me nervous.

ELROY
Don’t be nervous, baby. Let Elroy
relax you.

He tries to touch her face, but she moves.

BETSY
I don’t like being touched when I’m
in fear mode. It’s fight or flight
and there’s nowhere to run.

ELROY
Ooooh an adrenaline junkie. I can
smell my own kind.

Elroy tries to tickle her.

BETSY
No. Stop. I don’t like this, Elroy.

ELROY
Baby, you know you–

He begins sniffing the air.

ELROY (CONT’D)
Your fear smells different.

BETSY
I farted, Elroy.

ELROY
You…farted? But why?

BETSY
I was nervous. And you tickled me.
And when someone tickles me when
I’m nervous I feel threatened. And
when I’m threatened I–

ELROY
Don’t say it. My ears they can’t
take it, Betsy.

BETSY
You called me Betsy! You did it!
I’m not baby anymore!

ELROY
That’s right. Baby would never put
me in a corner with toxic fumes.

BETSY
I thought you were different. I
thought you were a MAN, Elroy! A
man who can smell lady farts and
enjoy it! But I guess I was wrong.

ELROY
I guess so.

BETSY
So now what?

ELROY
Now…you go ahead and head home.
I’ll stay locked in here with this
demon you unleashed. If I survive,
I survive. Then maybe when the dust
settles we can be friends.

BETSY
And if you don’t make it?

ELROY
Then it was OK knowing you…Betsy.

Elroy begins sniffing the air.

ELROY (CONT’D)
You smell that?

BETSY
You were freaking me out when you
were giving that speech back there.
I’m sorry.

Elroy begins gagging.

ELROY
Just go! Get out! Save yourself!

BLACKOUT.
